clean-coal technology

/klin-koʊl tɛkˈnɒlədʒi/ (say kleen-kohl tek'nolujee)

any of various processes which aim to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide or other pollutants produced in the burning of coal as a fuel, as coal washing, coal gasification, carbon sequestration, etc.
According to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007, burning of coal is one of the chief reasons for anthropogenic climate change and global warming. With more than one quarter of the planet's electrical generation being coal-sourced, the goal of clean-coal technology is clearly a worthwhile one but has yet to be proved to be commercially viable. The best-known attempt to effect clean-coal technology is in carbon capture and storage (CCS). Despite the claim of CCS that significantly less carbon dioxide is emitted, and despite the efficiency it offers in not scrapping an existing fossil-fuel-dominated infrastructure, integration of CCS with existing technologies has not yet been demonstrated in a full-scale power plant. In short, there are serious doubts as to whether CCS works and secondly whether it could be commercially viable.
